Funchal, Portugal

Wednesday April 5.  We finally have reached land.  We are now docked in Funchal.  We have visited this island many times in the past.  So today we will take the shuttle into the town and have a local lunch.

Funchal is the largest city in Medeira and the Capital.  It has a population of 11,892 and the 6th largest city in all of Portugal.  It is one of Portugal's main tourist attraction.

Funchal city is nestled in a great natural amphitheater.  It faces the Atlantic with a backdrop of mountains.  It is located in the stunning south of Madeira.  It is one of the Atlantic cruise ships main port of call.  It has become a tradition that most European Liners, on their maiden voyage, call here.

This morning we were up to swim for one hour.  We got to swim yesterday too.  The pool water is heated but I think they turn it off at night and then turn it on in the morning.  So the water is cool when we get in and warms up as we swim.  We do get a few people who do some laps but not many and not many laps either.

Sea days are quite the same with swimming, reading, needlepoint, etc.  Trivia is up and down.  We have come in third twice, second twice and that is it.  We have never won.  But there is still time.  One can only hope.

We had dinner the other in Pacific Rim.  This was the second time we ate there as the first was with Tom and Mona.  When they asked how our meal was, I stated that the lobster was not hot.  This seems to be a problem as several times the meal is not served hot.  At any rate, now they were fussing all over me.  They want us to return so they can fix it.

Last night we had our cocktails in the Explorer Lounge and then dinner in Compass Rose.  I had the Dover Sole as my main entree.  It is one of my favorite meals and on this ship, they serve it every night in Compass Rose.  On the other Regent ships, you can only have it in Prime 7.  A nice change.

We started watching "Gold".  Not sure if I like it but will finish watching today.  This suite has two TVs so I can watch in the living room while Bob naps in the bedroom.  A great advantage.

We decided to take the shuttle after we ate a light lunch.  We walked around the town and then took the shuttle back to the ship.  Dinner tonight in Compass Rose.

Yesterday we had lunch in Prime 7.  On this ship, on sea days they open up some of the special restaurants for lunch.  We have eaten there twice and really enjoy it.

Will try and post some of the pictures once Bob edits them.
